Question:
I was arrested for shoplifting in Virginia, but I didn’t mean to do it. How can you help me?
Answer:
Probably one of the most common criminal charges that most criminal defense attorneys handle in Virginia are shoplifting charges or larceny charges. There are a number of different types of larceny charges, including petty larceny, which in Virginia is larceny where the dollar value of the items taken was less than $1,000, or grand larceny where the dollar value of the items taken was over $1,000. Either one is very serious. Petty larceny carries up to a year in jail, a $2,500 fine, as well as a permanent criminal record. Grand larceny carries up to 20 years in jail, a $2,500 fine, as well as a permanent felony record.
Not only that, these are also what they call crimes involving moral turpitude. Those are ones that involve lying, cheating, or stealing. These are the worst kind of charges that you can have on your record because they go to your trustworthiness as a person. If employers see somebody with a charge of this on their record, it’s going to make it much more difficult to get a job. Therefore you want to make sure that you contact an attorney right away if you pick up a charge such as this so they can help you with your criminal charge.
